About
About this procedure
Revisional bariatric surgery refers to a follow-up procedure for people who have already had weight-loss (bariatric) surgery but need further surgery. Reasons include:
- Inadequate weight loss or weight regain over time
- Complications from the initial surgery (e.g. leaks, strictures, hernias)
- Malnutrition or medical conditions requiring intervention or reversal
- Changing anatomy: stomach pouch or anastomosis may enlarge over time, allowing more food intake and weight regain
Types of revisional surgery include: Conversion surgery (e.g. sleeve to gastric bypass when there is inadequate weight loss or recurrence of type 2 diabetes or severe reflux); Reversal (in selected cases of malnutrition or inability to meet nutritional needs); and Corrective surgery (repairing anatomy or addressing complications such as GERD, anastomotic ulcers, strictures, or leaks). Revisional bariatric surgery is often more complex than the initial surgery and requires careful evaluation by a multidisciplinary team. At Metabariatrics we use laparoscopic and robotic techniques where appropriate and offer comprehensive assessment and follow-up in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.
Recovery
Recovery after revision bariatric surgery
- 1Often longer hospital stay and recovery than first-time surgery.
- 2Strict phased diet and careful reintroduction of foods.
- 3Frequent early follow-up to monitor healing and weight trajectory.
- 4Lifelong vitamins and specialist follow-up.
