About

About this procedure

Revisional bariatric surgery refers to a follow-up procedure for people who have already had weight-loss (bariatric) surgery but need further surgery. Reasons include:

  • Inadequate weight loss or weight regain over time
  • Complications from the initial surgery (e.g. leaks, strictures, hernias)
  • Malnutrition or medical conditions requiring intervention or reversal
  • Changing anatomy: stomach pouch or anastomosis may enlarge over time, allowing more food intake and weight regain

Types of revisional surgery include: Conversion surgery (e.g. sleeve to gastric bypass when there is inadequate weight loss or recurrence of type 2 diabetes or severe reflux); Reversal (in selected cases of malnutrition or inability to meet nutritional needs); and Corrective surgery (repairing anatomy or addressing complications such as GERD, anastomotic ulcers, strictures, or leaks). Revisional bariatric surgery is often more complex than the initial surgery and requires careful evaluation by a multidisciplinary team. At Metabariatrics we use laparoscopic and robotic techniques where appropriate and offer comprehensive assessment and follow-up in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.

Frequently asked questions

Find answers to common questions about this procedure.

Revisional surgery is a follow-up procedure after a previous weight-loss surgery. It is used when weight loss was inadequate, when significant weight has been regained, or when complications (e.g. reflux, stricture, hernia) need to be addressed.

Common options include: conversion from sleeve to gastric bypass (e.g. for inadequate weight loss or severe reflux); revision of gastric bypass (e.g. reducing an enlarged pouch); or corrective surgery for strictures, leaks, or hernias. Reversal may be considered in selected cases (e.g. malnutrition).

Revisional surgery is generally more complex than first-time surgery and can carry higher risk. With experienced teams and advanced techniques (including laparoscopic and robotic), outcomes have improved. Your surgeon will discuss your individual risks based on your anatomy and reason for revision.

Reasons include: inadequate weight loss after the initial procedure; significant weight regain; complications such as hernias, ulcers, strictures, or leaks; severe reflux or Barrett's; or malnutrition requiring intervention or reversal.

Dr. Sharad Sharma and the Metabariatrics team have extensive experience in revisional bariatric surgery, including conversion and corrective procedures. Consultations are available in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.
