About

About this procedure

Metabolic syndrome is a group of conditions that occur together, increasing the risk of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. The main components are: a large waistline; high triglycerides or use of lipid-lowering medications; low HDL or use of lipid-lowering medications; high blood pressure or use of medication for it; and high blood sugar or use of medication for it. When two or more of these factors are present, the person is said to have metabolic syndrome.

People with obesity have a very high risk of developing metabolic syndrome, and those with metabolic syndrome have a significantly higher risk of heart disease and diabetes. Metabolic surgery, using bariatric procedures such as sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass, can lead to significant improvement or remission of type 2 diabetes and other metabolic parameters. The focus is not only on weight loss but on improving blood sugar, lipids, and blood pressure. At Metabariatrics we work closely with your physician and offer comprehensive metabolic surgery care in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai as part of our bariatric surgery programme.

Frequently asked questions

Find answers to common questions about this procedure.

Depending on the procedure (sleeve or bypass), you may lose around 50–70% of excess weight in the first 12–24 months. Metabolic benefits, including diabetes improvement, often appear early, even before major weight loss.

With minimally invasive sleeve or gastric bypass, most patients return to work in about 1–2 weeks. Physically demanding jobs may require a longer or phased return; your surgeon can advise.

Yes. You will have a full assessment including blood tests, heart and lung evaluation, and often endocrinology review. Your surgeon and physician will decide which tests are needed.

Metabolic surgery works by restricting food intake and, with bypass procedures, changing how nutrients are absorbed and how gut hormones affect blood sugar. Many patients achieve remission or major improvement in type 2 diabetes, often with reduced medications under medical supervision.

Generally, adults with type 2 diabetes and BMI ≥ 35, or BMI 30–34.9 with suboptimal glucose control despite medical therapy. Guidelines and eligibility are discussed in detail during your consultation.
